Policing Minister Ioane Naivalurua has warned against placing all the blame on the police for Fiji’s domestic violence problem.
His comment comes in the wake of claims that police officers are not adequately trained to handle domestic violence cases.
Mr Naivalurua said there were trained officers in all police stations to handle domestic violence.
While he acknowledged that addressing domestic violence remains difficult, he said improvements were being made.
“We are not holding back on improving all aspects of our work.”
In an interview with this newspaper, Mr Naivalurua said the police were committed to protecting women and children.
“We are concerned about the rate of violence but we are fully committed to their safety.”
He said the fight against domestic violence required shared responsibility from the whole community, not just the police.
“Everyone has a responsibility, the community, organisations and individuals.”
