The Northland women’s team may have done enough to book a spot in this year’s Royal Tea Ranadi Cup quarter-finals despite losing to Ovalau at Dawasamu grounds in Tailevu on Saturday.

The side was gutsy but was not enough as they went down fighting 24-29 to the tough visitors in round three of the competition.

Team manageress Unaisi Gaunavou is proud of how far the players have come.

“I am happy with how the girls performed today (Saturday) and hats off to Ovalau for a great game,” said Gaunavou.

She urges women in Tailevu to come out in numbers and help grow the sport within the province.

“I believe we are very behind in rugby, especially women’s rugby,” Gaunavou said.

“I am encouraging young girls and women in the Tailevu region to come out in numbers and try out rugby.

“There will be rugby trials happening near you as we aim to grow women’s rugby in our region.

“We need your support in stamping our mark and I urge women in Verata, Vugalei, and Wainibuka to come out and trial whenever we come around.”

The quarter-finals are expected to be played this weekend.
