Northern cane growers want change and growth

CANE growers in the North wants a positive change and growth in the sugar industry.

In making known their views at today’s sugar consultation held in Wailevu sector in Labasa, farmers highlighted the need to have better management of FSC.

Farmer Mohammed Rafique told management of FSC and stakeholders that they have wasted millions of dollars in the industry.

“We have wasted millions of dollars due to poor management,” he said.

“Some years ago, a few machines were brought in to be used in Seaqaqa but it didn’t last and again this is due to poor planning.

“The machines looked like toys in the farms and poor planning on our railway and all this has been done due to poor planning ”

Sugar tribunal chairman Timothy Brown said the industry needed to invest wisely.

“The industry needs to invest wisely and that’s a fact,” he said.
