VILLAGES that make up the district of Malolo in the Mamanuca Group said there was no unusual wave activity in the aftermath of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Fiji yesterday.
Yaro Village headman Joseva Soqeta said they were alerted around 12midday.
He said prior to the radio alert, villagers had been preparing to move to higher ground.
Similar stories came out of Yarolevu, Tavua and Yanuya yesterday. However, there were concerns over the delay in the announcement and circulation of alerts.
Solevu Village headman Jona Kadivuka said warnings and advisories were received from nearby resorts and not from authorities.
“We did not get any of our advisories from the provincial office or from the district office,” he said.
“We were only alerted when our relatives working at the resorts called to tell us that they were moving to higher ground with their guests.
“”If there was a tsunami. We would have found out too late.”
