Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says there is no rush to appoint a new Attorney-General following the termination of Graham Leung and the suspension of FICAC commissioner Barbara Malimali.

Speaking briefly following the back-to-back exits of the two senior officials, Mr Rabuka confirmed that he has not held discussions with Deputy Prime Ministers Professor Biman Prasad and Manoa Kamikamica over the matter.

Asked if he had met with either of them regarding the developments, the Prime Minister said, “no”.

He also clarified that the search for a new Attorney-General is still ongoing, and no candidate has yet been identified.

“No one is earmarked. We are looking,” Mr Rabuka said.

Ms Malimali was suspended by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu on Thursday evening, and Mr Leung was dismissed yesterday.

Both decisions follow the findings of a Commission of Inquiry into the controversial appointment of Ms Malimali as FICAC commissioner last year.

The Prime Minister is expected to return from Vanua Levu today.
