The Suva Magistrate’s Court has imposed a night curfew from 8pm to 5am as a condition of bail for a man charged with the abduction and assault of a military officer’s son.

In granting bail, Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne stated that the restriction was necessary to ensure the safety of both the public and the accused, Laisiasa Bavai.

While police prosecution objected to bail on the grounds of public interest and the accused’s safety, defence lawyer Kevin Skiba countered that Mr Bavai would be secure residing at his home with his family.

Mr Bavai is charged alongside another individual in relation to an incident that allegedly occurred on May 2 at Mead Rd, Nabua in Suva.

He has been released on a $1000 bail bond with standard conditions. Mr Somaratne warned Mr Bavai that any failure to comply with these terms would result in his bail being revoked.

Mr Bavai had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the court heard that no admissions had been made.

The case has been adjourned to June 15 for a pretrial conference.
