A FRESH wave of talent is emerging in Fiji’s amateur boxing scene, with Ilaijah Calevu at the forefront of this exciting revival.
The young sub-junior from Vatuvua Boxing Club in Nadi has made a strong impression by clinching back-to-back titles at the prestigious Fiji Golden Gloves.
His performances have showcased not only his natural ability but also a growing maturity inside the ring.
National head coach Cam Todd is optimistic about the future, pointing to Ilijah and a promising group of young fighters who are redefining the sport at the grassroots level.
“Yeah, Ilijah is one of our exciting sub-junior prospects that we have come through,” Todd said.
“We have a number of them which were all, to be honest, outstanding performers. I would have trouble getting them bouts in New Zealand or Australia given the level they box at and their age.”
Todd’s enthusiasm extends beyond just one fighter. He is particularly encouraged by the sheer number of young boxers eager to make their mark.
“It’s part of the sport over here that really excites me, seeing these young 10, 11, 12-year-olds and we have a number of them, not just Ilijah impressive … it’s exciting for me to see.”
With several sub-juniors showing exceptional promise, Todd is confident that Fiji’s amateur boxing ranks are on the verge of a significant upswing.
“But like I said, we have probably half a dozen sub-juniors which are extremely promising and I’m looking forward to seeing them develop in the amateur ranks and being our boxers of the future.”
Across gyms nationwide, the foundations for the next generation are being laid. And if Ilaijah Calevu’s rapid rise is anything to go by, Fiji boxing can look forward to a bright and competitive future.
