NEWLY-appointed Minister for Environment and Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu has expressed his determination to work closely with his ministry to address the growing challenges of climate change in Fiji.
After the swearing-in ceremony at the State House, the permanent secretary for the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Dr Sivendra Michael and staff members presented a sevusevu to Mr Bulitavu at their headquarters in Suva yesterday.
During the presentation, Mr Bulitavu outlined his commitment to enhancing environmental policies and initiatives aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change.
He emphasised the urgency of working with his ministry in tackling environmental issues and climate change.
“Climate change is one of the greatest threats we face, and it is vital that we act with urgency and innovation to address it,” Mr Bulitavu said.
Mr Bulitavu said that he was in his village in Vanua Levu when he received the message that he has a portfolio to serve.
“I was spending holidays at my home in Dogotuki, Macuata when I received the message, so I had to leave my family behind to attend a discussion upon this new role.
“It’s an honour to be given this portfolio and also have the confidence of the Prime Minister to be given this portfolio upon his invitation.”
He added that he has been informed by the PM and His Excellency the President that he has a very dedicated permanent secretary and team that he will work with.
He also highlighted the need to support vulnerable populations in Fiji, especially those that are most at risk from environmental disruptions.
As part of his vision, Mr Bulitavu stressed the importance of collaborating with local communities through partnership and projects that would help the affected communities.
Mr Bulitavu believes that with the expertise in his ministry, they will be able to gain resilience to achieve their Sustainable Development Goals that aligns to the ministry.
“We are already seeing the real-time impacts of climate change on our environment. As a nation, it is crucial that we integrate climate action into all sectors and policies.
“I am committed to ensuring that Fiji continues to lead by example in the global fight against climate change.”
