THE Ministry of Sugar has released a list of approved cane varieties that has to be planted by sugarcane farmers around Fiji.
The ministry had earlier warned that farmers who continue to plant un-approved varieties won’t be receiving any government grants and Fiji Sugar Corporation also won’t accept unapproved varieties for crushing at the mills.
The new list of approved cane varieties is tailor-made for areas that have rick soils, medium soils, poor soils, flat fertile soils and sandy soils.
“The list of sugarcane varieties approved for planting has been revised to include maturity trends,” states Ministry of Sugar.
“The varieties are recommended to growers on their soil type.
“The growers have a choice of at least three varieties to plant on their farms as laid down in the Master Award.”
Varieties that are listed under “early to mid maturing” include Aiwa, Beqa, Naidiri, LF91-1925 and Qamea.
Ragnar, Kaba, Kiuva and Viwa are cane varieties that have been listed under “mid to late maturing” list.
