Veronica Malani, the woman who lodged a complaint against former attorney-general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, has a new lawyer who has taken over from the acting DPP, John Rabuku.

It is understood that Mr Rabuku, who took over as counsel from April, withdrew from handling the case after he was appointed acting DPP.

Mrs Malani’s case was called for hearing before Court of Appeal president Filimoni Jitoko at the Veiuto Court Complex in Nasese.

Lawyer Sitiveni Raikanikoda told the court he needed time to file his notice of change of solicitor, adding that the case was a long pending matter.

“We hope we dispose this matter as soon as possible,” he said.

“We are trying to get all our bits together, and see what are the likelihood from the defence that we have to take the matter forward.”

Mrs Malani had lodged a complaint against Mr Sayed-Khaiyum in July in relation to a 1987 bombing incident.

Justice Jitoko adjourned the matter to January 22, 2024.
