THE Methodist Church in Fiji historian, Dr Andrew Thornley, has urged the iTaukei people to get a copy of the Old Testament of the Bible translated into original iTaukei language.
The Old Testament’s new edition, Na Veiyalayalati Makawa — Vakadewataka ko David Hazlewood (1864), was launched at the Centenary Church in Suva yesterday.
Dr Thornley said the new edition was much clearer than the current Old Testament.
“I am hoping that the Hazlewood (edition) would bring people back to reading the Old Testament in Fijian,” Dr Thornley said.
Church communications secretary Reverend James Bhagwan said the new edition was translated from the Hebrew language by Reverend David Hazelwood in the mid-19th century.
The new Old testament translation is selling for $40 at the Methodist Bookshop.
