A newly-refurbished $970,000 District Office in Nadarivatu has been officially opened, creating a centralised government services hub aimed at improving access for more than 5000 residents in the northern highlands of Viti Levu.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka opened the upgraded facility yesterday, with the event coinciding with World Rural Development Day which recognises the important role rural communities play in national development.
Mr Rabuka said the establishment of an iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) office within the same premises was a significant move towards bringing essential services closer to the people.
“We know that many developments that have happened in Fiji have been upon native land, it is, therefore, very appropriate that we have the TLTB office established up here also, with the refurbished District Officer’s office and facilities in Nadarivatu,” he said.
The upgraded complex includes improvements to the main administrative building and staff quarters, providing a more efficient working environment for government officials.
Divisional Planning Officer West Elimi Rokoduru said the project cost close to $970,000 and would allow government services to be delivered more effectively to five districts across the highlands.
The facility will serve 23 villages with a combined population of just over 5000 people.
The construction began in 2021 but was delayed by severe weather.
