THE Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) yesterday unveiled its first 23 candidates for the next general elections, with leader Aseri Radrodro saying the party was ready to rebuild and move forward.
The list features a mix of experienced figures and fresh faces, including Mr Radrodro, Simione Drole, Varinava Tiko, Victor Fatiaki, Pateresio Nunu, Taitusi Vakadravuyaca, Hazrat Ali, Viliame Takayawa, Pulotu Rika, Umesh Chand, Joni Dagoya, Ann-Mary Raduva, Acalia Nailoaloa, Filipe Qio, Vishwadeep Karan, Ro Iva Loki, Paul Peters Hazleman, Setareki Tunidau, Peniasi Rawaidranu, Intiaz Khan, Kasanita Qoro, Vilimone Bukateci and Joela Cama.
Among the notable inclusions is former acting leader of the New Generation Party, Varinava Tiko, who joined SODELPA after responding to the party’s expression of interest.
Mr Radrodro said the successful applicants had shown courage by putting themselves forward to serve the country.
“It is exciting to see new faces in politics,” he said.
“We think that they have the courage to put in their names and complete the selection process. I commend all those who have come on board.”
He said more candidates would be announced in the coming weeks, with several prospective nominees still committed to their current professional responsibilities.
“Most of the candidates are still committed to their responsibilities and roles. Some want to leave, but they feel the time is not yet right.”
Mr Radrodro said rebuilding SODELPA had been a gradual process since he assumed the party leadership two years ago.
“This does not happen overnight. It started two years ago when I was appointed party leader and revamped the Social Democratic Liberal Party.
“I am really happy that candidates have found trust in the party to be part of our journey.”
On the inclusion of Mr Tiko, Mr Radrodro said the former New Generation Party member had joined through the party’s open expression of interest process.
“They believe in the party, they believe in our platform, they believe in our objective and our vision.
“Our constitution reflects that we are an inclusive party while at the same time we stand for indigenous issues.”
Mr Radrodro also confirmed SODELPA would contest the next general election under its own while remaining open to future discussions on possible political partnerships after the polls.
