As the people of Lau prepare to witness the installation of the Tui Nayau, a long-forgotten tradition will also return to life, the sound of cricket in the islands.
For the first time, a provincial cricket tournament will be held in Lakeba from Tuesday July 1- 5 as part of the celebrations for the Sau ni Vanua ko Lau and Lau Provincial Council meeting.
Games will be played at Tubou and Yadrana using the T20 format under ICC rules.
Cricket Fiji chief executive officer Sitiveni Roko said this was an important moment for the islands and their young people.
“We’re not just running a competition,” Roko said.
“We’re giving youth a platform, honoring tradition and bringing back a sport that has deep roots in Lau.”
Organising Committee chairman Sunia Lesivou said the tournament will also be an opportunity to bring the people of Lau together,.
This will strengthening community spirit and reviving long-standing traditional ties and relationships.
