Survival Advocacy Network project co-ordinator Sesinieli Naitala said girls as young as 14 to 15 were engaged in child prostitution in red light areas around Suva.

Ms Naitala, a former sex worker, said they usually got high by sniffing glue and “did it” to financially support their families.

“Some underage girls stand on the streets and engage themselves in sex work in broad daylight in Nabua,” she said.

“The saddest thing about this issue is that underage girls as young as 14 to 15 years old are engaged in it.

“Some of these underage sex workers will be holding tins of glue and sniffing them while out on the streets looking for clients.

“They resort to glue sniffing to get high because it’s cheap to buy when compared to other drugs like marijuana and white drugs. She said the increase in number of underage girls in the sex industry was concerning.

“Some of them are on the streets because they are supporting their families, while some come out because of peer pressure.”
