Need to teach locals

THERE is an urgent need to teach locals rudiments of building designs, technology and procurement to ensure Fiji has a skilled set of experts available in the country in this area.

The comment was made by Housing Authority of Fiji CEO Dr Punit Sethi at the Fiji Institute of Valuation and Estate Management annual conference held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Saturday.

He said while it was common knowledge that there was a lack of skilled people available locally in the building industry continuing to outsource would not solve the issue.

“Why don’t we get consultants because outsourcing work means they go back and leave locals without any experience,” he said.

He added if stakeholders get involved in teaching youths about building design, technology and procurement they would be investing in the future of the industry.

“This is investing in the future of the building industry rather than just getting companies to build for you.”
