Residents of Taveuni are calling for the establishment of a pharmacy on the island, saying the lack of access to basic medicines is forcing patients to travel to Savusavu or Labasa at significant cost.

Market vendor Viniana Ranadi said many residents face difficulties when prescribed medicines are unavailable at the hospital pharmacy, particularly for common health conditions requiring immediate treatment.

“Sometimes simple medicines like those for skin diseases are not available at the hospital,” Ms Ranadi said.

“There is no chemist here in Taveuni, and there is a need for one to be established.”

She said travelling outside the island to obtain medication was both inconvenient and financially challenging, especially for families already facing rising costs.

“We have to travel either to Savusavu or Labasa to get the prescribed medicines. We have to spend at least over $100 just to get there for the medicines.”

Ms Ranadi said a permanent pharmacy would provide much-needed relief for residents by improving access to essential medicines and reducing the need for costly travel.

“The setting up of a proper chemist in Taveuni is much needed.”

She urged authorities to consider supporting the establishment of pharmacy services on the island, particularly for residents who cannot afford frequent travel to access healthcare needs.
