NAVUA could officially be declared a town as early as next month, says Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa.
Speaking in an interview after public consultations held in Navua, Mr Nalumisa said the process to declare Navua a town first started in 1973, but rapid economic growth and new developments have made the declaration more important than ever.
Mr Nalumisa said public consultations had received strong support from residents who have waited many years for the area to gain town status.
They have been longing for this for a very long time.”
He said town status would bring long-term benefits, including increased Government investment, improved infrastructure and greater opportunities to attract private investment.
He also confirmed that the Ministry is aiming to complete the declaration next month, although planning work and further consultations on the town planning scheme would continue.
He added that the two provinces linked to Navua, Serua and Namosi and their chiefs have given their support for the declaration to make Navua Fiji’s 14th town.
