AFTER more than five decades of waiting, Navua’s long-held dream of becoming a town has finally become a reality, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka yesterday declaring it Fiji’s 12th town and 14th municipality.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Rabuka said the declaration marked the fulfilment of an aspiration that dated back to 1973 and recognised generations of people who had contributed to the development of Navua.
He said after many years of advocacy, conservation and preparation, the people of Navua had the privilege of seeing that long-held hope becoming a reality.
Permanent secretary for Local Government Seema Sharma said the declaration was particularly significant for the ministry because Fiji had not established a new town for 16 years, the last being declared in 2010.
Mr Rabuka said the declaration was not an end in itself and warned that the new status brought greater responsibilities for the council, businesses, communities and residents.
He said the transition must be guided by good governance, financial responsibility, effective planning and accountability.
Mr Rabuka said Navua’s growth must also be carefully managed to prevent pressure on roads, drainage, water and sanitation systems.
He highlighted the need for stronger resilience against flooding, cyclones and heavy rainfall, while protecting the Navua River and surrounding environment.
He said the true measure of yesterday’s historic declaration will be what Navua delivers for its people.
“The real meaning of today will be seen in what comes next.”
