FIJI Airways has cancelled 14 Nadi-Hong Kong flights over the next two months because of the decline in demand as a direct result of the coronavirus outbreak.
The announcement came in the wake of the World Health Organization declaring the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak a global health emergency after about 213 deaths and more than 9600 being infected by the deadly virus.
“Fiji Airways is reducing some Hong Kong flights in February and March 2020, due to the decline in demand from the region as a result of the coronavirus alert and mainland China travel restrictions,” said an airline spokesperson in response to queries from this newspaper.
“This reduction in capacity represents about 35 per cent of services to and from Hong Kong over this period.
“The airline will continue to monitor the situation and further adjust schedules to and from Hong Kong if required.” The national carrier said it would ensure passengers would not be inconvenienced in light of the updated schedule.
“Fiji Airways will re-book impacted guests on other scheduled services, and will update them about the flight changes if booked directly with the airline.
“Guests booked through travel agents and third parties are encouraged to contact their respective agents.
“Presently, flight schedules to/from Singapore and Japan remain unchanged.”
Fiji Airways said Nadi-Hong Kong flights scheduled for February 5, 9, 12, 16, 19, 23 and 26 had been cancelled.
Similarly, Nadi-Hong Kong flights scheduled for March 4, 8, 11, 18, 22, 25 and 28 have also been canned.
The national carrier said all other scheduled flights to Hong Kong would operate as normal unless otherwise changed.
