FIJI women’s football striker Cema Nasau is the latest local star to secure an overseas contract, signing with Eastern Suburb Football Club in New Zealand.
Nasau, 25, who hails from Ba, is regarded as one of the best women’s strikers in the country.
She has been a consistent performer for Ba Women’s in the Digicel Women’s Super League and has worn the national jumper with pride over the years.
Fiji Football Association chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf confirmed the signing, calling it a reward for her hard work and discipline.
“We are proud of Cema,” Yusuf said in an interview yesterday.
“Her talent has been recognised, and she has landed a contract with a professional club.”
He added that Nasau, along with the other three Fijian women playing overseas, will return to represent Fiji in the OFC Women’s Nations Cup, which will be held in Fiji in July.
“All four girls will be back for the Nations Cup. We are building a strong team, and their experience will help us.”
Nasau’s move makes her the fourth Fijian woman footballer now playing abroad, a growing sign of progress for the women’s game in Fiji.
“She sets an example for our young players.”
Nasau’s signing follows a string of breakthroughs by Fijian female footballers in the last two years, as local talent continues to attract attention from overseas clubs.
Her journey from the Ba grounds to an international contract is expected to inspire many young girls who dream of wearing the Fiji jersey and playing professionally.
