Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube said the Minister for Women Lynda Tabuya has hijacked dialogue on the drug scourge by advocating the death penalty, which he said was a “short-sighted answer”.
Mr Narube said Fiji needed to unite to eradicate the biggest threat facing the future generation, therefore leaders needed to focus on finding practical and acceptable solutions.
“Apart from its serious human rights violations, this draconian measure, on its own, is not the answer to our drug crisis,” Mr Narube said.
“We urge our leaders to think through this serious threat carefully before making public statements.
“They must respect the prime minister and the Cabinet.
“We strongly insist that solution to the drug crisis must be an integrated one and all the necessary steps must come together in the right sequence.”
