THE Housing and Local Government Ministry is seeking greater government support in the upcoming financial year to address urgent housing needs.

Minister Maciu Nalumisai highlighted to the media this week key priorities the ministry intends to pursue, including the relocation of nearly 800 families who have been served with eviction notices.

“One of the major projects we’re focusing on now is the relocation of families who urgently need assistance,” he said.

“We’ve identified some land parcels, but we still need to acquire and develop that land before relocation can begin.”

The minister says additional funding has been requested from the Finance Ministry to support land acquisition, upgrading works and the provision of relocation assistance.

He stressed the importance of ensuring displaced families are resettled on secure and appropriately developed land.

In addition, the ministry is advocating for an increase in allocations for the First Home Ownership Assistance and Housing Assistance Grant schemes, citing the rising demand for affordable housing.

“With the Housing Authority launching new projects this year and more people looking to buy homes or land, we are asking the Government to increase its allocation for housing grants.”

Mr Nalumisa also reiterated the need for ongoing subsidies to support those currently living in informal settlements and to strengthen the capacity of housing agencies.

“Housing agencies like the Housing Authority are preparing to build more houses and lots in the next financial year.

“We need government support to ensure first-time buyers can access these opportunities.”
