The Vanua Wailevu has stepped up efforts to unlock the commercial potential of its land resources, presenting progress updates and new development proposals during a Bose Vanua meeting held on Friday at Wailotua No. 1 Village.
The meeting brought together representatives from five villages and 21 mataqali, with iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) chief executive Solomone Nata in attendance to receive updates and discuss future plans.
Central to the discussions was the Naiyala Growth Centre Project Proposal, a pilot initiative developed in partnership with TLTB aimed at driving sustainable, commercially focused land use within the yavusa.
Mata ni Tikina Wailevu and Development Committee representative Mataiasi Dinavuso outlined the long history of development efforts dating back to 2004, including the establishment of the Vanua Wailevu Business Arm and the Tikina Wailevu Cooperative.
He said past initiatives, including agricultural programs and overseas market engagement, had laid the groundwork but were often constrained by limited infrastructure support.
“Earlier proposals were constrained by limited government support for essential infrastructure such as packing sheds, container freezers, electricity, and water-storage facilities,” Mr Dinavuso said.
Momentum has since increased following TLTB’s involvement in 2024 and the introduction of the Taukei Development Fund Facility (TDFF), which provides financial support to landowners pursuing business ventures.
Mr Nata commended the Vanua Wailevu for its sustained efforts over the years and highlighted the importance of adapting a business-focused mindset.
“He acknowledged the development updates and progress by the mataqali, agricultural production and market engagement, and the Naiyala Growth Centre concept plan presented for the first time,” the statement said.
He also emphasised the need for accountability in financial management.
“Mr Nata stressed the importance of honesty and accountability in financial dealings, clarifying TDFF requirements and assistance provided,” the statement noted.
Significant progress has already been made, with 13 mataqali completing the landowner empowerment process and projects underway, while the remaining eight are expected to follow.
The initiative includes agricultural programs supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, food security efforts such as rice farming, and infrastructure proposals to address access challenges.
Mr Nata said the Vanua Wailevu initiative could serve as a model for other communities across Fiji.
“He noted that Vanua Wailevu’s initiative could serve as a pilot project for broader development in Fiji,” the statement said.
He reaffirmed TLTB’s commitment to supporting landowners through the TDFF and ensuring that applications are properly reviewed for approval.
The meeting concluded with a shared vision to strengthen economic opportunities for future generations through structured and sustainable land development.
