Naiqama to lead Bati

WEST Tigers flyer Kevin Naiqama will lead the Vodafone Fiji Bati team in the much anticipated Test match against Toa Samoa in Apia tomorrow.

Naiqama, who made his debut for the Fiji Bati in 2009 has a wealth of experience under his belt and is one of the senior players in the side.

The other experienced players expected to assist Naiqama guide the youth-dominated side are James Storer, Korbin Sims, Kane Evans and Eloni Vunakece.

Fiji National Rugby League CEO Timoci Naleba said Naiqama was selected by the team officials to lead Fiji’s campaign against the bigger and physical Samoans.

“Kevin has been chosen to lead the side and he is capable of carrying out the responsibility required in that position,” he said.

“He will be assisted by other senior players such as Korbin, Evans, Vunakece and Storer.”

Naleba said the Test match was vital for all players as this was an opportune time to convince the national coach for a spot in next year’s Rugby League World Cup.

He said the players had bonded well and eager to showcase their talents against the Samoans.

“This game will lay a foundation for next year’s world cup and the players know the significance of this match.

“The team bonding is strong and the boys have combined at training.

“The experience boys are guiding the young ones and we are expecting a good display.’

Naleba said the game would be crucial for both teams on the different reasons best known to them.

“Samoa will be celebrating the 30 years of rugby league existence in Samoa while the Fijians will also celebrate Fiji Day on Monday.

“Both teams will want to win and the game is expected to be physical and exciting.”

Naleba also acknowledged the inclusion of Pio Seci in the side being the lone local-based player.

“Pio is very excited to be part of the team and really perform well on and off the field.

“The senior boys are providing Pio with the technical aspects of the game and he is enjoying the moment.”

Naleba said the side would be named today.
