PENALTIES will be applied for the recent brawl between Nabua Broncos and Topline Warriors, which took place during the first round of the 2025 Vodafone Cup at Bidesi Park in Suva.
This has raised serious concerns within the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL), following the chaotic events that unfolded during the game.
The FNRL is poised to implement stringent penalties to address the misconduct and unacceptable behaviour exhibited by players and spectators alike.
FNRL Chairman Akuila Masi has made it clear that the league does not condone violence in any form.
“The match was disrupted by misconduct and unacceptable behaviour resulting in the multiple brawls both on and off the field,” said Masi.
“I understand that they are an ongoing rivalry between the Nabua community, which has spilled over to the playing field.
“We acknowledge the impact of social issues on the lives of our young people, and we embrace the challenge that comes with it, and FNRL is committed to creating better pathways for the growth and development.”
He adds the FNRL judiciary will be convening to review the incidents and impose appropriate penalties. Potential consequences include match point deductions for both teams involved, suspensions for players identified as instigators of the brawl, and bans for spectators who participated in the violence.
The FNRL is taking immediate steps to enhance security measures at games, and the organization expresses gratitude to the Fiji Police Force for their presence during the match.
“We are taking immediate action, from this week, we will tighten up our security and we thank the Fiji Police force for their presence on Saturday, although it was unexpected to erupt in such way, thankful to all who trying to stop the brawl.”
Players are role models within their communities, and their conduct on the field reflects on the FNRL.
Masi adds the league advocates for respect, discipline, and community spirit, values that were severely compromised during the brawl.
