LONG before international chart placements, radio airplay and millions of streams, Tahi Johnson Fiu was a little boy with a guitar placed gently into his hands.
Music found him early.
Encouraged by his family, he was introduced to the instrument long before he imagined a career in the lucrative yet cutthroat music industry.
His first guitar became more than a childhood gift. It was a tool that ignited a lifelong passion that continues to grow.
As the years passed, he expanded his musicianship to the bass, piano and other instruments, driven by an endless curiosity not only to perform music but to understand how it was written, arranged and produced.
Growing up as a proud Rotuman-Fijian living in Australia, Fiu learnt that talent alone would never be adequate. Discipline, humility and respect were just as important as technical ability.
Countless hours were spent practising, listening and refining his craft, laying the foundation for a journey that would eventually carry him well beyond Pacific shores.
That commitment was rewarded when he earned admission to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
Making his mark in the world
Today, his time at Berklee stands as the launching pad for an international career built not under the spotlight, but behind the scenes where producers, composers and session musicians quietly shape the music heard around the world.
Since graduating, Fiu has steadily established himself as a respected producer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and bassist, working with artists across the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia.
His productions have reached audiences well beyond Fiji, with songs he produced accumulating more than 1.9 million Spotify streams across three titles alone.
The artists he has collaborated with collectively boast catalogues that have attracted hundreds of millions of streams worldwide.
Among his most recognised credits is Favela by Dublin rapper KhakiKid, where Fiu laid down the song’s signature bass and guitar parts.
The single climbed to No.10 on the Irish Homegrown Chart compiled by the Official Charts Company and remained in the Top 20 for five consecutive weeks.
It also earned airplay on Ireland’s leading broadcasters, including iRadio, Spin 1038 and the national broadcaster RTÉ 2fm, introducing Fiu’s musicianship to listeners across the country.
His growing reputation continued in the United States through his work on Sorry 2 Disappoint You, the album by Grammy-nominated songwriter Ré Lxuise.
Serving as composer, producer, writer and multi-instrumentalist, Fiu helped deliver a project that reached No.24 on both the Songstats United States and Global R&B/Soul Album charts, while also charting in Finland, Qatar and Azerbaijan.
Tracks from the album received rotation on radio stations in the United States, London and Finland, further expanding his international footprint.
In October 2023, Fiu also provided assistant production for Ré Lxuise’s opening performance for Macy Gray and California Jet Club at Atlanta’s renowned Eastern Theatre.
A growing portfolio
His portfolio continues to grow through collaborations with internationally recognised artists.
His production and instrumental work with kidsnot$aints has connected him to an artist whose catalogue has surpassed 42 million Spotify streams.
His bass and guitar performances feature on Donny Daydream’s VACANCY EP from Hong Kong, while he has also recorded with acclaimed Korean guitarist Rock Choi, an endorsed artist for D’Angelico Guitars, Jim Dunlop and Electro-Harmonix.Live performance has remained equally important throughout his journey.
Together with fellow musician Timothee Alex, Fiu formed the duo T&T, performing at Berklee’s inaugural Grad Fest at the House of Blues in Boston in 2023.
He has also shared stages internationally, including performances supporting Australian artist KIMMI at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory.
What is unusual about Fiu’s story, viewed from Suva, is not that a musician with Rotuman roots has reached the international stage—Fiji has produced globally recognised artists for generations. Rather, it is that he has built his career from the production chair.
Bass players, producers and session musicians are rarely the names printed in the biggest headlines. More often, they are the creative force whose work appears in the credits rather than on the marquee.
The recognition accumulating around Fiu’s name has come from chart compilers, broadcasters and editorial curators within the music industry itself, reflecting the respect he has earned among professionals.
A tribute to his roots
For young Fijian and Rotuman musicians who dream not only of performing but also of writing, arranging and producing music, Fiu’s career offers a tangible example of what is possible.
His growing catalogue demonstrates that success in the modern music industry extends well beyond the stage and into the recording studio, where songs are imagined, shaped and brought to life.
Now based in Los Angeles, Fiu continues to collaborate with artists, producers and songwriters from around the world, including Sony songwriter and producer Raphael George, while expanding a career that continues to connect Fiji to the international music industry.
Despite the growing list of achievements, chart successes and global collaborations, Fiu remains grounded in the values that first inspired his journey.
Asked what advice he would offer a young bassist from Rotuma hoping to follow a similar path, his answer echoed the lesson first taught by his father:”Show respect,” he said.
“Respect the music. Respect the people in the room. And never forget where you come from.”
For Tahi Johnson Fiu, the journey that began with a guitar placed in the hands of a curious young boy, continues to take him to greater heights in world music.
Today, his name appears on recordings heard around the world, proving that any young musician proud of his Rotuman and Fiji heritage, can help shape the soundtrack of a global audience.
