Munch back to help develop rugby players

IT was his love for the sport like any other Fijian that loves rugby that made him set up the Uprising rugby team and their very own 7s tournament in 2011.

And after about three years of the tournament being inactive, Munch is back in the country to revive what he started.

Yesterday saw another brainchild of his, the Uprising U19 team consisting of players from around the Galoa to Deuba area taking part in the Uprising-sponsored schools tournament made for Under-19 players.

Speaking to Times Sport yesterday, Munch said the club had players right from the age of 12 years.

“Well since I’ve moved back to Fiji, I’ve decided to start, well you could call it an academy but really it is a club for juniors; so we go right down to under-12. And it’s really mainly to give youths of the area something to do,” Munch said.

Munch said the team had just been together for the past two months.

“So we’ve just come together for the last two months, training together, developing and teaching of rules and regulations of rugby and skills. We have one experienced player from Yamacia but he’s from the area and that’s why we have him.

“The main thing was coming back. I’ve been travelling a lot for work and family commitments and we were such at a pinnacle when it stopped three years ago.

“I mean the last Uprising 7s defeating the national team and having my boys being selected, and since then there hasn’t really been anything further, so we’ve started again, getting them involved.

“They are very enthusiastic, these young ones were little boys when Waisea Nayacalevu, Avenisi Vasuinubu and Metuisela Talebula were playing for us.

“They all were aspiring to go there, then the club went on a bit of a break for three years, now they’ve come along and pride is there again to represent Uprising and to develop it.”
