FOLLOWING the 1987 coup, Fijian businessman Bobby Khan migrated to New Zealand with his family.
He returned to the country 23 years later to set up a string of successful ventures, including a supermarket and an events centre.
Yesterday, Mr Khan unveiled his biggest investment yet — a multi-million dollar tourist property christened Resort Relax Fiji.
During the opening of the 34-room and 17- villa property on Friday, Mr Khan thanked his family and the team of dedicated workmen who helped build the resort.
“It was a great challenge to finish a resort of this size,” he said.
“We had initially set a time frame of 12 months but exceeded it by three months due to some unforeseen circumstances.”
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said the project was another vote of confidence in the tourism industry in Fiji.
“It’s even more special because the investment has come from someone who left the country disillusioned in the wake of the 1987 coup,” he said.
“Taking advantage of my Government’s multiple nationality policy, Bobby and his wife Azreena decided to return home and join the growing number of Fijians coming home to contribute to our economy and build the new Fiji.”
The new resort situated at Sonaisali employs about 60 people.
