The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is working closely with South Sea Cruises Pte Ltd to ensure the safe removal of the grounded Blue Lagoon Cruises vessel, MV Fiji Princess.

The vessel ran aground on April 4 near Monuriki Island in the Mamanuca Group after dragging anchor during severe weather.

MSAF said its priority is to protect the marine environment and ensure the recovery operation complies with strict safety standards.

“MSAF’s primary focus remains the protection of the marine environment and ensuring that the recovery operation is conducted in strict accordance with maritime safety standards,” the authority said.

Meanwhile, Blue Lagoon Cruises has confirmed the retirement of the vessel following the incident.

“The ship… dragged whilst at anchor during a severe weather event and as a result grounded on a nearby reef,” the company said.

The operator added that affected guests will be contacted and offered alternative arrangements.

MSAF said it will continue to monitor the operation and provide technical oversight throughout the removal process.
