WHILE most of Fiji is still asleep, 50-year-old Watisoni Kaitaci is already preparing for another long day on the road.
Long before the first rays of sunlight appear over the hills of Wainimala, Naitasiri he has started his vehicle and begun the journey that has become part of his life for the past 15 years.
Originally from Lutu in Wainimala, Naitasiri, Watisoni operates a carrier service along the route from Matanisau, Lutu, Waibasaga, Botenaulu, Nausori and into Suva before making the return trip home in the afternoon.
His passengers are mainly villagers from the highlands, many of whom travel to Suva to sell fresh produce at the market or attend to important business in the capital.
His day usually begins between midnight and 1am., a demanding routine that requires discipline, commitment and sacrifice.”It is not an easy job,” Watisoni says. “I thank God every day for his guidance and protection throughout my life and my work.”
For Watisoni, driving is more than simply transporting passengers from one destination to another.
It is a responsibility that carries the lives and livelihoods of the people who depend on him.
If his carrier is not full when he leaves the village, he stops along the route to pick up additional passengers, ensuring that no one is left behind if they need transport.
The journey itself is far from easy. The roads leading from the highlands are steep, winding and challenging, especially during the early hours of the morning when visibility is limited.
Every trip demands complete concentration. “The roads are difficult with many hills and slopes,” he explains. “When I am driving, I know I am responsible for many lives. My duty is to make sure everyone reaches their destination safely.
Behind every kilometre he travels is an even greater motivation his family.
Watisoni is married and the father of five children. Some are pursuing tertiary studies while others are completing high school.
Like many parents, he works tirelessly to ensure his children receive opportunities for a better education and a brighter future.
“It is our responsibility as fathers to provide for our families, everything I do is for my children.”
From Monday through Saturday, his passengers know they can rely on him.
On the rare occasion that illness prevents him from driving, he makes sure they are informed early so they can arrange alternative transport.
Building trust has been just as important as building his business. Despite rising fuel prices and increasing operating costs, Watisoni continues to persevere.
He admits that making ends meet has become more challenging, but he remains focused on working hard and serving his community.
As someone who has spent years overcoming challenges, Watisoni hopes young people will embrace opportunities instead of giving up when life becomes difficult.
“There are many opportunities out there,” he says. “You have to stay consistent, work hard and keep praying.
“There will always be obstacles, but with determination and faith, you can build a future for yourself and your family.”
For Watisoni Kaitaci, every journey begins in the darkness before dawn.
Yet through his dedication, faith and commitment to his passengers, he continues to brighten the lives of countless families who rely on him every single day.
