MOTHER’S Day in Fiji is a time of deep reflection, gratitude, and celebration, bringing families and communities together to honour the invaluable role of mothers.
For 56-year-old Fusi Mary Whippy, the meaning of this special day extends far beyond a once-a-year celebration.
She believes motherhood should be celebrated every day, recognising the constant love, sacrifice, and dedication mothers provide in the home.
Originally from Bua and now residing in Calia, Navua, Whippy works at Uni Fiji as a security officer.
As a mother of five children two sons and three daughters she has experienced firsthand the journey of raising a family single-handedly.
Her children are now grown, married, and working, yet they continue to prioritise their mother, especially during Mother’s Day each year. Mother’s Day for many families holds a unique place in society, transcending cultural and religious boundaries.
It is a heartfelt communal celebration that highlights a mother’s selfless love, enduring strength, and a central role within households.
While globally recognised on May 10, the essence of the day remains universal, honouring mothers for their unwavering commitment and sacrifice to hold families together.
Despite the widespread celebration, Whippy maintains a simple yet powerful perspective.
“I don’t believe in Mother’s Day being celebrated one day in the year…to me Mother’s Day is every day, because mothers play a key role in their families,” she said.
Her words reflect the reality of motherhood, where responsibilities never pause.
From caring for children to managing the household and maintaining a career, mothers continuously give their time and energy for their families wellbeing.
“Mother’s look after the children, the home, go to work, often leaving in the mornings and returning late after a hard day’s work.”
For Whippy, these efforts should not be confined to recognition on a single day but appreciated throughout the year.
Still, Mother’s Day remains close to her heart, largely because of the cherished moments she shares with her children.
“My best memory of Mother’s Day, is when my kids, never miss a year to celebrate Mother’s Day with me, despite their busy schedules.
“They always make time for one special day for me, and that is one thing I will cherish forever.” Whippy also reflects on the realities of motherhood, acknowledging both the challenges and rewards.
“As we all know we mothers are human and often face some ups and downs raising our children.
“There are bad and good times, but at the end of the day there is always a place in a mother’s heart for their children.”
As Mother’s Day approaches, Ms Whippy extends her heartfelt message to all mothers…”For all mothers out there, it is a big day for us, and a special time to celebrate with our loved ones so we should look forward to it, and on that note I wish all mother figures a blessed Mother’s Day, this year.”
