Most schools across Fiji will resume classes tomorrow after the Ministry of Education announced a partial reopening following an improvement in weather conditions.
Education Minister Aseri Radrodro said the decision was made in consultation with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO), the Fiji Meteorological Service and other relevant authorities after reviewing the latest situation reports.
Under the revised arrangements, all schools in the Central Division will reopen except those in Naitasiri, Namosi and Rewa, where flooding and unsafe access routes remain a concern.
In the Western Division, schools will resume normal operations except for those in the Ra Education District, which will remain closed due to adverse weather conditions and safety concerns.
Schools in the Eastern Division will also reopen, with the exception of those in the Lau and Kadavu Education districts.
The Ministry said persistent strong winds, heavy rainfall, rough seas and transportation challenges, particularly for students who rely on boat travel, had necessitated the continued closure of schools in those areas.
All schools in the Northern Division, along with those not specifically identified, are expected to resume normal operations from Wednesday, June 17.
Parents and guardians have been encouraged to exercise discretion when deciding whether to send their children to school and to prioritise their safety.
School leaders have also been advised to continue monitoring conditions and maintain close communication with their respective Divisional and District Education Offices.
The Ministry said it would continue to liaise with the NDRMO, Fiji Meteorological Service and other relevant agencies and issue further updates should conditions change.
“The safety and well-being of students, teachers, and school communities remain the Ministry’s highest priority,” the Ministry said.
