The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) has called for the resignation of Barbara Malimali as Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner.
FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry said this was until complaints against her for abuse of office were dealt with appropriately by officials who were independent and impartial.
Mr Chaudhry said it would be a travesty of justice to let her assume office as head of FICAC while under investigation herself.
“It should be noted that she was under arrest and was being questioned when the process was hijacked by pre-empting her appointment,” he said.
“Also, of concern here is the unmistakable nexus between her and Attorney-General Graham Leung.
“While the A-G is trying to pose publicly as an independent and impartial observer, we know for a fact that he is closely associated with her appointment behind the scenes.”
Mr Chaudhry said they were reliably informed that Ms Malimali was not an applicant when the FICAC commissioner’s post was first advertised in June 2024, however, she had applied when the position was readvertised on July 13.
Ms Malimali was contacted for a comment yesterday, however, a response was not received.
