Fijian girls will soon be provided with a monthly voucher to buy their preferred sanitary pads, says Education Minister Rosy Akbar.
She told Parliament yesterday that Year 6 to Year 13 girls will be able to purchase the pads from authorised vendors which will be determined through a tender coordinated by the Fiji Procurement Office.
“For girls in the rural and maritime areas, we will be assisting these girls through their schools with the provision of their supply,” she said.
“Our initial survey reveals that there are some girls in Year 6 who will also need this support.
“We are making it the responsibility of the school to ensure that these girls are also supported.”
Ms Akbar said 55,225 girls would benefit from the menstrual hygiene management program.
The Government has committed $1.5 million towards this initiative.
