Senirusi Seruvakula – SUPPLIED

THEY mean business! That’s the gist of how Fiji Rugby Union chairman John Sanday described FIJI Water Flying Fijians acting head coach Senirusi Seruvakula and the coaching panel’s approach to the first round of the inaugural Nations Championship in July.

Seruvakula has named the Flying Fijians 50-member extended squad earlier this week and with a promising list of young and experienced players on it, Sanday says it is “powerful”.

“It’s a powerful squad,” Sanday stated. “And it’s a reflection of Senirusi’s (Seruvakula) attitude, and also the attitude of his supporting staff (and) the assistant coaches.”

He observed how the panel was adamant on working towards ensuring their performance was a commendable one.

“I think they have demonstrated that they are not here to be good; they want to be excellent and I’m encouraged,” Sanday said. “I like what we’re seeing. We just now need to continue to build and give them all the resources that they need and all the support that they need to deliver the results on the field, that’s about performance excellence.”

Seruvakula and supporting coaches have been hard at work preparing a team for the Nations Championship fixtures in Wales, England and Scotland for the Southern Hemisphere round in July.

Sanday revealed Seruvakula and the coaches had met with some players last Monday.

“I’m happy to report that the coach and coaching staff have had the first meeting last night (Monday night) with the players and the management or the leadership team of the 50-man squad,” Sanday shared on Tuesday.

“And they have come to an agreement on the rules of their get-together and how they are going to play their games and how they are going to organise themselves, and how they need to respect the values leading up to the match and how they are going to build the team – so it’s going well.”

It is understood the Flying Fijians will convene in London before heading to Cardiff in Wales to face the Welsh in their opening Nations Championship match on Saturday, July 4.
