The discharge of untreated wastewater into the Sabeto River is being treated as a serious regulatory violation by Lion One Metals, said the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources.
The Ministry said it is taking decisive action after Lion One Metals Limited admitted the leakage on Thursday, May 22.
“The discharge, which lasted four hours and resulted in significant fish mortality along a 2-kilometre stretch of river, is being treated as a serious regulatory violation,” said the Ministry.
“All wastewater discharges into the Sabeto River are now suspended until further notice.”
“Water sample analysis is currently underway, with results expected within the week.”
The Ministry has also imposed a six-month environmental audit.
“To prevent recurrence, MLMR will conduct continuous environmental audits of Lion One’s operations over the next six months.”
“The company’s environmental protection framework will be tested rigorously to ensure genuine reform.”
