RURAL roads will be one of the main focus for the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

While touring the Western Division recently, Minister for Infrastructure Ro Filipe Tuisawau said the maintenance and upgrade of rural road was one of Government’s main priorities.

“This is my first visit in my capacity as the minister responsible for roads and the intention is to see the status of rural road infrastructure and how we can improve it moving forward,” he said.

“The state of some of these rural roads is not good and there is a real need for urgent maintenance works. “I also visited some low-level crossings that have been used for years which need upgrading works.

“It is a priority for the Government to see that this is addressed as safety for those using these roads is paramount.” Ro Filipe toured the flood damaged region recently with a team from the Fiji Roads Authority visiting interior settlements where crossing have been damaged by continuous heavy rain and natural disasters.

Following the site visits, the minister issued a directive to FRA to carry out maintenance works for affected residents.

“I have directed the team from the Fiji Roads Authority to address residents’ concerns and have addressed funding issues for road maintenance with the Minister for Finance.”

In a recent statement, the FRA confirmed an allocation of $15 million from the Ministry of Finance to help with ongoing maintenance works.
