In a move to promote green practices within government offices, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has launched a recycling project at its headquarters.
Permanent secretary Dr Sivendra Michael emphasised the importance of waste management initiatives, stating that the ministry is leading by example.
“We’ve partnered with the Pacific Recycling Foundation to set up recycling bins here at our head office,” Dr Michael said.
“These three bins will serve as a starting point for proper waste sorting, and we are encouraging other government ministries to follow suit.”
The project aims to foster a culture of proper waste disposal among ministry staff while spreading awareness about waste sorting and recycling practices.
Dr Michael noted that while the project begins at the ministry level, it also aligns with larger national waste management efforts.
“We often talk about starting from home, but now we’re asking: what is the government doing? This initiative is part of broader steps, including the development of container deposit regulations. We’ve received approval to engage a consultant to address industry concerns and ensure inclusive dialogue,” he said.
Past efforts to implement container deposit regulations were paused due to insufficient consultation with stakeholders. However, Dr Michael confirmed the initiative has been revived under the current administration.
“Recently, we hosted the national plastic symposium, bringing together industry stakeholders to discuss solutions and strategies. It was a platform to share science-based approaches and plans for better waste management.”
While Fiji’s waste management efforts are gradually improving, Dr Michael stressed that more action is needed to achieve sustainable and impactful change.
“Like I said, waste management here (in Fiji), is gradually improving, but more needs to be done.”
