Lion One Ltd has been ordered by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to immediately cease all untreated discharge into the Sabeto River.
The Ministry’s crackdown follows a discharge incident by Lion One Ltd into the Sabeto River in Nadi, which triggered widespread public concern.
Following site investigations and water quality tests, the Ministry issued the company a Prohibition Notice on 6th June 2025 directing Lion One Ltd to immediately cease all untreated discharge into the Sabeto River.
The company was also issued a Non-Compliance Notice for breaches of seven conditions of Lion One’s Waste Disposal Permit, based on elevated levels of zinc and lead detected during tests on 26th and 28th May 2025.
As a result of these actions, Lion One has ceased operations and is undertaking remedial works, which must be completed to the satisfaction of the Ministry.
In a statement, Minister for Environment and Climate Change Hon. Mosese Bulitavu said: “We have acted decisively and will continue to do so within our legal mandate. The protection of Fiji’s environment remains our top priority.”
Mr Bulitavu reiterated that environmental protection is not just a regulatory requirement but a national duty.
He said the Ministry’s legal mandate allows it to act swiftly in the face of breaches, including suspending or cancelling environmental approvals.
