Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete says he is unaware of the circumstances surrounding the death of a male nurse who was an alleged victim of police brutality.

Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, he said the ministry “does not condone any sort of violence against anyone”.

“I’m yet to be briefed by my staff on the nurse,” said Dr Waqainabete.

He said he knew the staff member but did not fully understand the incident surrounding his death.

“We also want to understand the reasons why this thing has happened and ways in which we could prevent it from happening. “We need to go back and find the reasons and then deal with it appropriately.”

Dr Waqainabete said they would work with relevant authorities to get to the bottom of the case.

“This is something that we will approach together with relevant authorities to understand the reasons why these things have happened and also what other authorities are doing.

“We have to also understand the grievances of the family and to make sure we find closure for the family — that is important.”
