Minister Kiran’s portfolio expanded to include Cohesion

Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran has had Cohesion formally added to her ministerial portfolio, following a new assignment issued by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

Under Legal Notice No. 126, Ms Kiran is now designated Minister for Women, Children, Social Protection and Cohesion.

The change took effect from September 9, 2026.

The legal notice, dated September 28, states that the Prime Minister revoked Ms Kiran’s previous assignments and responsibilities under Legal Notice No. 1 of 2025 before issuing the revised ministerial assignment.

Her portfolio now covers government responsibilities including women and gender development, child protection, social welfare and assistance, disability issues, family welfare, marriage guidance, poverty monitoring, probation and community corrections.

The Ministry is also formally designated the Ministry of Women, Children, Social Protection and Cohesion.

Ms Kiran retains responsibility for the Department of Social Welfare, Department of Women and the Poverty Monitoring Unit.

The portfolio also administers legislation including the Adoption Act 2020, Child Care and Protection Act 2024, Child Justice Act 2024, Child Welfare Act 2010, National Council for Older Persons Act 2012 and Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2018.

The ministerial assignment was made by Mr Rabuka under section 92(3) of the Constitution, which provides for the Prime Minister to assign responsibilities to ministers.
