RATU Sir Lala Sukuna was an important man in Fiji’s history, says Minister for Defence Pio Tikoduadua.

While celebrating Ratu Sukuna Day and Girmit Day in Toko, Tavua yesterday, Mr Tikoduadua paid tribute to their contributions to the country’s development.

“He is someone who is very important especially to the iTaukei of Fiji,” Mr Tikoduadua said.

“He is someone who they looked up to in the past as their leader and has been able to shape much of the way that iTaukei think today.”

He said the Girmitiya also played an important role in shaping Fiji.

“These are people who made us today.

“Without the Girmitiya, Fiji would not be what it is today.

“In every aspect of our society and we have to thank the dedication and sacrifice of those who came here virtually as slaves to build this nation and its people.”

He said Ratu Sukuna and the Girmitiya had set a foundation that all Fijians should learn from.

“There are many things that happened during their times. Things that we can learn from.

“Their sacrifice, the weakness and their strengths and we want to follow in these footsteps that makes them better.

“They are teaching us to share, to love each other and look after each other.”
