PUBLIC Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has stressed the importance of safeguarding and preserving Suva Harbour.
His comment follows a visit to the wreck of the Lomaiviti Princess II and other derelict vessels within the harbour this week.
In a statement, Ro Filipe expressed disappointment with the Lomaiviti Princess II incident after it was towed without proper checking and monitoring.
“We must ensure we safeguard the Suva Harbour and peninsula at all times,” he said.
“This land and maritime area were entrusted by the vanua of Navukavu, Na Turaga Rokobaleni, and the vanua of Nadonumai and Tui Suva of Rewa Province for the benefit of the nation.
“I have expressed my disappointment with what happened in this LP II incident in which the ship seems to have been towed without proper checking and monitoring.
“It’s just sheer recklessness, and I have ordered a full investigation.”
Ro Filipe said the Government was actively undertaking all necessary measures to contain the oil spill and mitigate the environmental damage.
