The welfare and wellbeing of Fiji’s boxers must remain the top priority as the newly appointed Boxing Commission of Fiji begins its three-year term.
Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru made the call yesterday while appointing Eroni Loganimoce as the new commission chairman.
Pranil Goundar has been appointed vice-chair, with Iliesa Namosimalua and Lai Corerega joining the board as members.
The appointments follow the completion of Adi Narayan’s term as chairman on July 31.
Saukuru challenged the new board to raise the standard of professional boxing while ensuring the sport’s athletes are properly protected.
“As you take up your responsibilities, I wish you every success in lifting the standard of professional boxing in Fiji. I encourage the new Board to work closely with all stakeholders to strengthen the governance, administration, development and promotion of the sport.”
He said the safety, health, development and future of boxers must remain central to the commission’s work.
“Our boxers are at the heart of this sport. Their safety, health, development and future must always be given the highest priority.”
Saukuru also urged the board to create greater opportunities for boxers, coaches, officials and administrators while developing a stronger and more professional boxing system.
He acknowledged the contribution of the outgoing board and thanked the wider boxing fraternity for its continued support.
“The development of boxing cannot be achieved by the Commission alone. It requires a strong partnership among all those who have a stake in the sport.”
Saukuru said the new board must build on existing work while strengthening governance and athlete welfare.
“As we move forward, let us remain focused on creating a boxing environment that is well governed, professionally administered and, most importantly, centred on the welfare and development of our athletes.”
He wished the new board wisdom, strength and success during its tenure.
