WORK is being conducted at all sugar mills around the country to ensure an incident that resulted in the death of a mill worker at Lautoka last year is not repeated.
Samuela Sigatokacake, a father of four children, suffered 50 per cent burns to his body after the support structure of an evaporator gave way, pouring extremely hot water on to the Lautoka mill factory floor on July 25.
Fiji Sugar Corporation executive chairman Abdul Khan said consultants had been engaged to conduct a review of structures in all mills to ensure the safety of mill workers.
“We don’t want what happened to Samuela to ever happen again,” he said.
“The consultants have closely scrutinised all structures within our mills and found some issues.
“They have conducted X-ray inspections of high pressure vessels.”
Mr Khan said the late Mr Sigatokacake’s family was being financially assisted by the FSC to ensure they did not face any undue hardship.
The Fiji Sugar and General Workers Union had lodged a complaint with the police last year in regards to the incident.
Police west media liaison officer Naina Ragigia said investigations into the incident were continuing.
