Fiji’s national athletics coach Albert Miller says he is pleased with times recorded during the Athletics Fiji Summer Series competition held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on Saturday.
Athletes from Suva to Nausori corridor took to the tracks, with most preparing for the annual Coca-Cola Games which is scheduled to be held at the Laucala bowl on May 11-13.
Miller said the competition was also another preparation for elite athletes gearing up for the Pacific Games which will be held in the Solomon Islands in November.
“Today was another competition that’s on our calendar of competitions as we work our way towards getting athletes to qualify for the Pacific Games,” Miller told the Fiji Sports Council.
“We had some very good times today, some very good results. Attendance was mostly from the Suva schools. So we’re very happy with the athletes that took part and I think it’s only going to get better from here on as we get close to not only the trials and our nationals in April, but also for upcoming Coca-Cola Games zone meets and the Coca-Cola Games.
“In addition to all the competitions and all the athletes that came in today and our weekly competitions, I’m happy to say that we had about two or three athletes in the senior men’s 100 metres sprints that basically achieved the qualifying standards for the Pacific Games. It’s a start and we’re looking forward to more competitions and more athletes qualifying.”
