“We’re proud of them no matter what.”
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School under-14 girls head coach Shamal Prasad says he is happy with his side’s performance despite going down 1-0 to Suva Muslim Primary in the semi-finals of the Suva Inter-Primary Football competition yesterday.
The two sides battled it out in the scorching heat at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, heading into extra time before Suva Muslim was able to find the back of the net to steal the victory.
“Even though the girls are upset that they did not win the match today, we the coaches and the teachers are happy with the way they performed and fought against such a tough school like Suva Muslim Primary,” Prasad said.
The two sides were tied nil-all in the two spells and headed into extra-time where Suva Muslim managed to seal the victory in the opening minutes.
“They are a very strong team, and they have a good set of coaches, so I am happy with the way we stood up to them today.
“Though the results were not favorable, the girls gave their best and that’s all we expected out of them.”
Prasad said the girls had been performing well throughout the three days of competition, and were expecting to book a spot in the finals.
“But it wasn’t our day today and we can accept that there can only be one winner.”
Meanwhile, Prasad thanked all the supporters, parents, and students for turning up in numbers to the stadium yesterday, and apologised for not being able to come out with a win.
“We thank all our fans, parents, and students for coming here today, your support means a lot to us.”
