Fiji men’s hockey head coach Shaun Corrie says his side’s preparations for the 2024 FIH Hockey World Cup in Oman later this month are on track.
For the first time, Fiji will be competing at a World Cup in the sport of hockey. Corrie said there had been a lot of anticipation and excitement with just a few weeks until the tournament.
“Preparation has been going well over the past few weeks and the boys are looking forward to competing,” Corrie said.
“We just have three more weeks before the tournament starts, and the boys have been working hard over the past few months.”
He said the team expects its lone overseas-based player Adrian Smith to arrive in the country this week. Fiji has been placed in Pool D, alongside the US, Malaysia, and Oman.
“We’ve been placed in a tough pool, but the boys are ready to go all out for Fiji.
“Being the first team from Fiji to compete at the World Cup is a huge achievement for Fiji Hockey, and the boys are excited to be part of history.”
Both the men’s and women’s sides will be competing at the World Cup after an impressive outing at the Pacific Games last month, where both teams won gold.
“The Pacific Games helped a lot in the development of the team, it brought about a lot of things we needed to work on and that’s what we have been doing since.”
Corrie added their goal for the World Cup was to make their presence known on the global stage.
“Since this is just our first World Cup, our goal is to just let the world know that we too have what it takes to compete on the international stage.”
