People intending to join SODELPA as members will have to go through their branches to register.

Party general secretary Viliame Takayawa said this was to avoid any miscommunication and heated exchange during annual general meetings.

“In the past, a lot of times people would just be randomly picked from the streets and asked to attend the meeting,” said Mr Takayawa.

“And when they come to the AGM they come and cause discussions because they do not know what the party has been discussing before the meeting.

“So from now onwards, we will follow our constitution in that we will register people through the branches and we will not be accepting any registration fees during the AGM.

“People have to register through their branches.”

Over the weekend, some members complained that they were not allowed to pay their registration fees.

Ba West president Seremaia Tuiteci said the communication from the head office of the party was not clear.

“At first we were told to pay the fee, then we were told not to pay for the fee and when we came to the AGM we were told to pay it,” said Mr Tuiteci.

“There was no clear communication from HQ.”

Mr Takayawa reiterated the party would only consider members who registered through their constituencies.

“We are trying to get the branches to take ownership of their operations and their members.

“This is going to be the practice as we move forward.”
